A Taste in a Sniff

Does food smell really influence its taste? Do they really go hand in hand? Have you ever tried taking bitter medicine while pinching your nose? How about being incapable of tasting food due to colds?

First and foremost, smell does not influence taste but is an integral part of flavor. The texture, creaminess, spiciness and the temperature of food do not come out from taste. Smell cells that are located at the end of nasal passage helps perceive flavor. The taste and smell of appetizing foods set up the digestive tract for digestion by stimulating the flow of saliva in the mouth and gastric juice in the stomach thus proving that those two senses go hand in hand. Therefore, you are not only what you eat but also what you smell.
